Erik The Web

I'm a geeky, non-religious computer nerd and an avid watcher of movies, a player of games and a lover of astronomy, living in sunny Southern California. These are my occasional observations on life, the universe, and ... you know the rest.

“America is a melting pot, not a salad bowl.” We’ll get back to you when we figure out what that means.

It means Dan Savage just struck GOLD. #TossedSalad

“The First Amendment was written neither to guarantee freedom of religion to Muslims or Buddhists or Hindus nor to prohibit their free exercise of religion. It wasn’t written about them one way or another. It was written for one specific purpose: to protect the free exercise of the Christian religion. We must be clear: the First Amendment does not prohibit the free exercise of alternative religions, but neither does it guarantee it. It simply does not address the issue at all.”

American Family Association spokesman and demagogue royale Bryan Fischer, trying to see how many feet he can get into his mouth.

Our only question: If this is how he mangles the meaning of a single 45-word sentence, what’s that say about his interpretation of the Scriptures?

(h/t Joe.My.God.)

Well that is just about one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read, but that really shouldn’t be that surprising, given who said it.

I believe I may have made a Christian friend of mine think today! Toby’s a former coworker of mine, and a nice guy, but I found compelled to respond to his comment this morning about how you can only be a hopeful person with God in your life.

In the statehouse, Bachmann made opposition to gay marriage her signature issue. Both she and her husband, by all accounts her most trusted political adviser, believe that homosexuality can be cured. Speaking to a Christian radio station about gay teenagers last year, Marcus, who treats gay people in his counseling practice, said, “Barbarians need to be educated. They need to be disciplined, and just because someone feels this or thinks this, doesn’t mean that we’re supposed to go down that road.”

Unreal.

Fucking unreal.

Hey isn’t that what Andrew Jackson said right before he went against the Supreme Court and caused the deaths of thousands upon thousands of Native Americans?

I can’t. I just fucking can’t.

And to think, some people in our country would like Michelle and her husband to be the ones in charge.

Honk if you’re holy

I saw two diametrically opposing bumper sticker slogans on the way into work today. One that says “Pray For America” superimposed on a (long-since faded) American flag, and another one that said “Coexist” with the letters made out of different religious symbols, such as a cross, a crescent, etc.:

Which gave me a thought: this “Coexist” sticker - as an atheist, would you want that on your car? Does this really express the way you feel about other religions? I think it’s more of a symbol for moderate atheists and apologists; myself in particular, I want every religion to go away. I think all are damaging, and all are mass delusions capable of great harm. Religion of any kind should die. None of this “coexist, live in peace and harmony” nonsense.

It’s been pretty well proven without a doubt that religions tend to be the start of conflict, especially when groups holding varying religious beliefs have to share a border, whether it be natural or man-made. Rather than learning to “coexist” with these beliefs straight away, why aren’t we trying to simply eradicate them? Our society, and the planet, would be much better off.
